Mermaid
What I didn’t pay for tonight
but got nevertheless
was the mermaid tattoo
between the shoulder blades
on the back of the woman
sitting in front of me.
Her fingers—the mermaid’s—were crossed.
Her hair was cliché flowing
and clearly blonde, despitethe sole black ink.
Her recline was too casual to beplanned, naturally.
And her face,
this is where I became side-tracked
because in her recline
her chin
was tilted down
onto her sternum
in a coy, almost, dare toimagine
just what she could be thinking
[despite the single fin belowher navel].
And my side-track on her coy headdip
and pursed lips
and bright eyes
kept me happily confused
all night long.
